Reservoir Sandstone Patterns, Green River Formation, Duck Creek Oil Field, Uintah County, Utah

John C. Osmond

Abstract

Oil is produced from sandstone in the lower part of the Green River Formation which was deposited near the shore of Lake Uinta. These oil fields are in an east-west belt 60 miles long and 6 miles wide. The reservoir sandstone represents marginal lacustrine environments: fluvial channel, shoreline and deltaic. Close spaced drilling in the Duck Creek field, near the middle of the belt, makes possible mapping of isopach patterns of sandstone deposited in these environments. These maps improve the efficiency of exploration, development and secondary recovery projects.
